Beech Fork Birds

Beech Fork Birds

Seasonal List of Birds at Beech Fork State Park

Beech Fork State Park located about 5 miles south of Huntington, West Virginia. If you are traveling on I-64 the park is located just 4 miles south of the interstate. The east end of the park is entered from route 10 and has a large camp ground and is a excellent site for spotting warblers. The west end is entered from route 52 and has a boating ramp, marine supplies, rental boats, and is dominated by the dam.

This list is compiled by a birder that is far from expert- so you're likely to see many more if you're an expert. During the early summer it is quite easy to see more than 30 species at the east end of the park. I usually start at the visitor center and head southeast over to the far side of the bridge or on the old road north east of the visitor center or up into the woods to the north (trail starts by the ranger house).

In the winter I tend to head to the west end and head southeast from the dam towards beaver dam area east of the swimming area.

The list is a recreational list in that I bird for enjoyment not to provide scientific data. This means that for example the Oven Bird record is that I did not see it after July. In fact in mid summer I stop going into the woods because of the increased insect population including ticks.

In the summer I tend to favor the east end with the large warbler population whereas in the winter I tend to the west end where the Kinglets and Woodpeckers then to be more numerous.

The record here is one of a continuous 12 month period (94-95) where I visited the park at least once a month.

Have a good time!
