Johnny R. White
Artist Statement

The body of work that I am currently exhibiting explores the pathways between intangible realities, such as dreams and tangible realities that we experience during the waking state. The door is a metaphor which I often use as a symbolic vehicle to depict the transitions between different states of being. In our everyday life, doors are viewed as entrances, avenues of escape, or even just passages from one physical area to another. Since we are all familiar with the functionality of doors, they offer powerful potential as a symbol.

The commencement of each of my works begins with a direct, and often literal, interpretation of a dream. I feel strongly that the dream can be viewed, symbolically, as the connection between the known and the unknown. As the work progresses I simplify my design, allowing the true meaning of my dream to become clear to me. Often times, my preconceived notion of what a piece in progress means is entirely different than how I feel about the completed work. The final, and most crucial stage of my work comes when the viewer experiences the piece, navigates their way through its multiple layers and arrives at their own perception of its total meaning.

My sculptures are usually classified as mixed media or assemblage works. I choose that mode of working because it offers a completely unrestricted and virtually unlimited spectrum of options. This type of art production has allowed me to employ many different media and has provided the opportunity to explore unknown potential hidden within the materials and objects I use. The creation of each piece brings with it new learning both about myself and the materials with which I am working. This learning invigorates me and illuminates the path towards my next work.
